Whilst every day is Fire Door Awareness day at the PAL Centre of Excellence, National Fire Door Safety Week is an industry awareness campaign to increase understanding of the vital role that fire doors play in protecting life and property. This trail-blazing campaign is managed by The British Woodworking Federation and is supported by a number of high-profile partners, including the BWF Fire Door Alliance, the Home Office’s National Fire Safety campaign, the National Fire Chiefs Council & the London Fire Brigade.
Since 2013, Fire Door Safety Week has worked hard to highlight the importance of fire doors and raise awareness, with a different key focus each year. In the past, the focus has been on Grenfell, fire safety in care homes, and the dangers of smoke – this year, the focus is firmly upon the importance of fire doors and the inevitable dangers that arise from poor installation and maintenance.
Over the past few years, it has become increasingly clear that a lacklustre approach to fire door safety and awareness is a tragedy waiting to happen and a social issue with increasingly dangerous implications.
With recent reports highlighting the huge number of doors failing inspections in the UK in 2021, there is a painfully clear need for a better industry-wide understanding of what makes a fire door compliant and with new legislation on the horizon for January 2023, the national spotlight upon fire door safety is increasing year on year.
